The President has announced that the Treasury Department will give Federal recognition to same-sex marriages for tax purposes.  It's unclear whether this decision will apply to "civil unions", "registered domestic partnerships", etc.  Stay tuned...

Hi Richard,
I'm a tax attorney in Sacramento. I, too, am watching the change in law carefully. I have advised my same-sex clients that the "non-owing" partner will become liable if they get married. I am sending them to family law attorneys to have pre-nuptial agreements drawn. I assume you are in L.A. Let me know if I can be of help to you with respect to tax issues.
